From Mexico and Central America the platty is a firm favorite with it's hardy nature and pleasant temperament. Growing to 5 - 6cm it prefers moderate temperatures 18 - 24C and a hardish alkilide water pH 7 - 7.5.
Females tend to be slightly larger than males and colours vary from almost black/blue (tuxido platty) through blue/green to orange (Marigold Platty) and onto bright Red. Always popular are the combination colours such as the 'Wag' Platties (Red Wag - Bright Red with a solid Black tail) or the 'Mickey Mouse' platty with its black tail markings resembeling Mickey Mouse's head and ears.
As with all livebearers the sexual differences are obvious and females give birth about every 28 - 30 days. Best kept as 2 females to every 1 male.
