Found throughout Africa this charming catfish is named after the
distinctive Giraffe patterning which is most pronounced in sub-adult
specimens. It does however fade a little with age, turning to a more
mottled brown colour. Several sub-species are identifiable by colour
variations across its vast geographic range, most notable being the Lake
Tanganyika form.
Size in the wild is 90cm (36”), and while it is unlikely to reach this size in the home aquarium, it will require a large tank to feel comfortable. Found in both lakes and rivers it is at home in a variety of water conditions in the temperature range 21° - 25°C (69° - 77°F) and pH 6.5 – 8.0.

Sex differences are unknown, but due to its size, breeding in the aquarium is highly unlikely. It will accept a wide variety of live, frozen and processed food. It has a relatively small mouth and a very peaceful temperament so is safe to keep with any fish to large to be considered food. It does not eat plants, but will uproot them in its hunt for food. It does not appreciate very bright lighting.
