Also commonly known as the Zebra Pleco or Imperial pleco, or by the L numbers; L46 or L98 it is found in the Rio Xingu, Para and Brazil river systems of South America.
A spectacular fish which is easy to keep and breed, preferring water with a neutral pH and a temperature between 26 °C and 30 °C. The dorsal fin has a high expansion and it is possible to develop a blue twinge when in prime condition. It has a sucker mouth with 4 whiskers. Like other pleco's it has a flattish stomach.
Zebra plecos are omnivores and frozen foods, such as blood worms and brine shrimp can be fed as well as veggies such as crushed peas and algae wafers
They are a little shy and appreciate some hiding places where they can retreat during the day. Being mainly nocturnal it is important to ensure that they do get sufficient food, so saving a small quantity until after "lights out" is a good idea.
They are quite rare in the aquarium trade, but this is due almost entirely to their high price.
