Garra Rufa

Native to Eurasia it is found in the Jordan, Orontes, and Tigris-Euphrates river basins. Also in some coastal rivers in southern Turkey and northern Syria. Known as the Doctor Fish this somewhat plain looking sucker mouthed loach is famous for several reasons.

As the Doctor Fish it is used in Spa establishments to groom the limbs removing any dead or flaking skin. It is used extensively to treat patients with psoriasis and eczema and can bring relief from the more painful symptoms.

In the home aquarium it is one of the most prodigious algae eaters available. Unlike some of the better known sucker mouths it is active during the day and very hard working. Indeed it consumes so much algae that the owner must provide additional 'Algae Tablets' if the fish is to thrive.

Non-aggressive and relatively small they can be kept in shoals in most home aquariums. A neutral pH around 7.0 and temperatures between 15 °C and 28 °C make this an undemanding fish so long as it is well feed with plenty of vegetable matter in their diet.
