Usually found in quieter waters away from the faster flowing main river channels, often in gentle pools floored by leaf litter. It's range extends right across the Amazom basin from Peru and Colombia to Brazil.
Males may reach 3", although females rarely exceed 2" and both appreciate a peaceful aquariums with plenty of cover, caves and hiding places. Apistogramma species are usually found in and amongst leaf litter in their natural habitat. In the aquarium, this can be replicated by using leaves such as Indian Oak leaves which will also help to slightly lower the pH and hardness of your aquarium's water.

Prefers warmer water in the range 77-84°F (25-29°C) and a ph of 5.0 - 7.0, although tank breed specimens will tolerate harder more alkaline conditions.
Although most specimens will accept dried foods, these should not be used as the basis of the diet. The fish will develop much better condition and colouration if offered a varied menu consisting of lots of small live and frozen foods with additional feedings of dried products.
