Following their success in previous seasons we are again stocking large goldfish for outdoor ponds. Although not a new species these beautiful red and white specimens (Carassius auratus) have been selectively breed for their large size and hardiness.
Kept in good conditions these fish may reach 40-60cm and with a lifespan of 30 - 40 years. They are a hardy species and should cope well with the British weather in any reasonably sized pond. Water conditions are the same as for any pond species:-
No Ammonia or Nitrite and a pH 7 or above.
All our pond fish are fully quarantined and aclimatised and are currently feeding on standard floating pond sticks. As with any batch of fish size does vary a little but in general the body length is approximatly 10" (excluding the tail fins).
Update November 2009:
Another Pond Season come and gone, and with the exception of a few hardy souls to keep the filters seeded, all Koi and Goldfish are now over-wintering at our quarantine ponds. They are due back in the shop next Spring when we hope to have another great selection of outdoor species for 2010.
