Maldives 2005 Gallery
The photographs in this gallery were taken by Lydia and Leslie in November 2005 in the waters around the island of
Vakarufalhi, South Ari Atoll, Maldives. The island, 98 kilometres SW of Male, is
only 250M in diameter and totally surrounded by a shallow lagoon which stretches out about
100M to the main reef. At high tide water depth over the reef is less than 2M, while low tide sees many of the corals exposed above the
water for long periods of time. Outside of the reef the depth increases to 30M - 50M, but water clarity is such that it is possible see Turtles,
Sharks and Rays cruising around the base of the island. Although some of the photos are not of fish, they do help to give some
perspective of what a real Coral Reef is like, above and below the water.
